Position Highlights The Arizona Geological Survey is a nonacademic research department in the University of Arizona tasked with furthering our understanding of the geology, mineral resources, and natural hazards of Arizona. We invite applications for Scientific Analyst II to join our team. This position is responsible for the dual roles of AZGS publication management and AZGS public communications. Publication management duties include creating, editing, standardizing, and communicating AZGS publications to relevant academic and government databases. AZGS database activities include consultation and technical assistance to a wide variety of AZGS research faculty on how to maintain, access, and utilize database content.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Evaluates AZGS research products such as maps, reports, cover sheets, metadata, and other materials for compliance with AZGS, UA, federal government, and other applicable publication standards under moderate guidance. Submits AZGS publications to academic, state, or federal archives, repositories, or other database outlets following existing protocols. Provides editorial edits to the data prior to submission.
  • Works autonomously with the public and/or research staff through email or phone calls where stakeholders require information specific to geological problems. Provide appropriate answers by leveraging prior knowledge of geology to research resources across AZGS publications or other Earth Science materials related to the state of Arizona as applicable.
  • As assigned, updates or edits historical AZGS publications to meet new publication and scientific standards. This may include editorial, publishing, or scientific updates. Scientific update will require knowledge of geology to conduct checks of source data, spot research data errors, and suggest or make corrections prior to re-publishing.
  • Works with AZGS staff to promote public awareness of AZGS publications and resources. This will include updating the website, post on social media, and other content development in support of the research utilizing existing knowledge of geology.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
