Position Highlights

The College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) is seeking an innovative and visionary academic physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/Gyn). Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine - Tucson, the Chair will partner closely with leaders from COM-T and Banner - University Medicine to strengthen and expand the department's clinical, educational, and research missions. This is a unique opportunity to advance women's health care across Southern Arizona by fostering groundbreaking collaborative research, delivering exceptional clinical services, and training the next generation of physician leaders. The Chair will provide strategic leadership to grow the clinical enterprise, which in turn will support the expansion of the department's research and educational efforts. This role offers the chance to shape the future of OB/Gyn services within a dynamic, integrated academic health system. The Chair will be expected to assess and build upon the department's existing strengths, extend the University of Arizona/Banner Health footprint, expand relationships and partnerships with community providers, recruit and retain top-tier faculty, and guide the department's development in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

The Chair will lead the Department in advancing clinical care, research innovation, and educational excellence while enhancing its national reputation. This physician leader will be responsible for developing and sustaining strategic initiatives, optimizing departmental resources, and driving growth across all missions. The Chair will provide visionary and operational leadership for the department within the College of Medicine - Tucson and across Banner University Medicine's Tucson-based facilities.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology includes 18 physician faculty members, three Certified Nurse Midwives and five Advanced Practice Providers across its Generalist, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Gynecologic Oncology divisions. The department continues to grow its faculty and has active recruitments underway in all three of its divisions. Faculty deliver clinical care and provide mentorship to trainees at Banner University Medical Center Tucson, Banner University Medical Center South, our primary ambulatory site at Banner University Medicine North, as well as multiple outreach clinics across Tucson and the surrounding region.

The ideal candidate will be a distinguished clinical and academic leader with a national or international reputation as a respected researcher, clinician, and educator. They will bring a strong track record of progressive leadership within an academic medical center. The Chair will articulate a clear vision for the department, inspire and support faculty, mentor the next generation of trainees, and drive measurable outcomes. This leader will be passionate about expanding complex clinical programs, fostering partnerships with community providers, and developing systems and processes that enhance operational efficiency. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a clear
    vision, strategic direction, and sustainable business model for the Department,
    ensuring clinical operations are efficient, patient-centered, and aligned with
    institutional priorities.
  • Expand and maintain high-quality
    clinical programs across Banner University Medicine's affiliated hospitals and
    clinics, positioning the Department as the region's leading provider of
    obstetric and gynecologic care.
  • Provide leadership that supports
    the professional development of current faculty and attracts exceptional new
    talent, aligning recruitment with the Department's strategic goals.
  • Mentor and coach emerging leaders
    to build internal leadership capacity and ensure long-term succession planning.
  • Develop a culture of
    interdisciplinary research by strengthening collaborations with affiliated
    departments, centers, and institutions, and by enhancing infrastructure to
    support research productivity.
  • Foster open, transparent
    communication with faculty, staff, and administrators to build trust, promote
    alignment, and enhance departmental cohesion.
  • Cultivate key institutional and
    community partnerships to support integrated clinical and research goals that
    align with the strategic objectives of the University of Arizona, the College
    of Medicine - Tucson, the University of Arizona Health Sciences, and Banner
    Health.
  • Establish and maintain performance
    benchmarks for clinical quality, surgical outcomes, patient access, financial
    stewardship, and service growth.
  • Provide oversight of departmental
    budgeting and resource allocation, ensuring alignment with financial goals and
    implementing policies that promote fiscal responsibility and accountability.
  • Lead educational excellence across
    the Department by ensuring innovative, high-quality training for medical
    students, residents, and fellows.
  • Identify and expand funding
    sources, including extramural clinical and translational research grants,
    philanthropic support, and clinical revenue, to strengthen the Department's
    financial and academic foundation.
  • Continuously monitor and enhance
    clinical quality to ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Build regional partnerships to
    improve the patient and referring provider experience while continuously
    monitoring and enhancing clinical quality.
  • Represent and advocate for the
    Department within the university, across Banner Health, and in the broader
    community.
  • Ensure compliance with all
    regulatory, accreditation, and institutional policies and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • An MD or MD/PhD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution with board certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Ability to obtain medical licensure in Arizona.
  • Must meet University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a senior level faculty position.
  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated leadership achievement in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary department with comparable complexity to University of Arizona/Banner Health.

  • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished researcher, clinician and educator who meets University of Arizona criteria for a tenured/tenure eligible senior level faculty position.
  • Demonstrated record of progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.
  • Evidence of an astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered model of care.
  • Demonstrated understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
  • Deep understanding of academic clinical practice, with a strong commitment to patient-centered care and clinical excellence.
  • Evidence of success in developing a strong clinical program that recognizes and meets the needs of the various providers with whom the department works, those of the students that the department educates and trains, as well as those of the patients whom the department serves.
  • Strong record of mentorship and faculty development, supporting academic, clinical, and educational advancement for faculty, learners, and trainees.
  • Strategic thinker and visionary with the ability to anticipate future trends and lead transformative change.
  • Evidence of success in leading and developing excellent graduate medical education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with internal and external constituencies and individuals.
