That's why we're looking for a Practice Group Assistant who will perform an expanded range of clerical/administrative duties in accordance with firm policies and procedures to effectively and efficiently support the legal staff in the firm's Intellectual Property (IP) Division.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for...



  • Performing administrative and clerical duties as needed, including processing expenses, document retrieval, sorting and organizing documents, and assisting with assembling business development materials
  • Assisting with monthly billing process, including organizing pre-bills for review, making minor edits to narrative, and finalizing and forwarding to client
  • Ensuring timely processing of client charges for all appropriate expenditures, including processing requests for payment of outside vendors
  • Assisting legal staff with new business intake, including opening new matters
  • Assisting with management of lifecycle of applications including drafting and sending routine correspondence
  • Assisting with out-processing of client files, including ensuring file cleanout, close file procedures, and special practice area filing procedures are followed
  • Attending required firm training programs and maintaining proficiency on all applicable software/applications
  • Utilizing quality control measures to produce error-free work consistently and efficiently


The successful candidate will demonstrate...



  • Minimum of one year of related administrative support experience; intellectual property experience a plus but not required
  • Ability to learn and work within a document management system
  • Ability to independently and efficiently prioritize workflow, and maintain an organized task schedule; demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with particular attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to various practice management styles of assigned legal staff; ability to proactively work with legal staff to address complex matters in a collaborative manner
  • Ability to achieve self-performance standards relating to accountability, ownership of assignments and client service; ability to exercise caution and seek appropriate guidance when necessary
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed
  • Knowledge of federal rules, regulations, U.S. and international Intellectual Property Law a plus but not required
  • Ability to effectively utilize IP docketing software and USPTO online resources


Pay Range for Candidates in Washington, DC:

$60,000 - $67,000 per year

The range provided is the minimum and maximum salary that Venable in good faith believes at the time of this posting that it is willing to pay for the advertised position. Exact compensation will be determined based on individual candidate qualifications and location.
