Department: Feinberg Development and Alumni Relations

This position is within the Feinberg School of Medicine's Development and Alumni Relations department, located in downtown Chicago, IL. A hybrid work schedule will be available after an initial period.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Foundation Relations within the Feinberg School of Medicine's Development and Alumni Relations department, the Associate Director, Foundation Relations manages organizational relationships for long term growth, including all appropriate stewardship activities. The Associate Director collaborates with assigned areas within the Feinberg School of Medicine to strategize and increase funding/revenue from organizations for specific needs. This position may also serve as the primary moves manager for a portfolio of organizational prospects, and may interface with deans, faculty, program directors and/or other University leaders to prepare them for prospect meetings and proposals.

Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Gathers data, assesses leads, and develops strategies designed to realize the engagement potential of organization prospects.
  • Maintains consistent and appropriate contact.
  • Facilitates or develops proposals; and ensures effective stewardship.

Collaboration

  • Involves moderate to high level of collaboration with both internal department partners and collaboration with broader University partners to identify and integrate resources in order to accomplish strategic goals and objectives.
  • Key partnerships include:
    • Office of Foundation Relations
    • Office of Sponsored Research
    • Alumni Relations and Development

Prospects and Gifts

  • Conducts research to identify potential funding sources and partnerships.
  • Disseminates information about funding or partnership opportunities to supervisors and faculty.
  • As part of the engagement/proposal process, facilitates good communication and access between foundations and the University by connecting Northwestern faculty and administrators to relevant offices, including for foundations as appropriate to University Relations, community affairs, human resources, or research and development.
  • Coordinates solicitations in the $50K- $1M range made in partnership with other staff, school/unit officers, and administrators.

Events

  • Arranges visits of foundation representatives to Northwestern, coordinating site visits involving lead administrators, faculty, and students; staffs these visits.
  • Follows-up on visits to secure funding for proposed projects.

Administration

  • Prepares briefings on key organizational prospects and writes descriptions of suggested funding opportunities that will lead to compelling proposals.
  • Writes proposals, collaborating with faculty and other staff.
  • Maintains project/prospect status reports; reviews reports from the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure all organizational funding is reported correctly.

Supervisory

  • May supervise or co-supervise temporary or contract workers as needed.
  • Provides training to staff within or outside of immediate dept or division in regard to function.

Miscellaneous

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university, leading to a Bachelor's degree or higher; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Four years' experience working in academic unit or industry or private foundation setting or the equivalent.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Excellent persuasive writing skills are required.
  • Self-motivated, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and good independent judgment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Office tools.
  • Excellent problem solving and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Customer relations skills are essential in working with Alumni Relations and Development staff as well as various offices throughout the University.
  • Ability to think strategically, analytically, and creatively is required: ability to inquire about and listen to an organization's interests and needs, and then to understand and determine how to build funding partnerships with them.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Experience in an academic medical school or center highly desirable.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Knowledge of medical education, medical research and funding opportunities for medical research highly desirable

Target hiring range for this position will be between $80,000-$84,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
