Widener University is currently seeking a full-time, third-shift Campus Safety Corporal. This indoor position averages 40 hours per week, with a 10-hour shift from 11:00 PM to 9:00 AM. The Campus Safety Corporal reports to the Lieutenant on duty and is responsible for the efficient operation of the Office of Campus Safety Dispatch Office. This role plays a critical role in security operations, ensuring smooth communication between security personnel, monitoring security systems, and handling both emergency and non-emergency calls in a timely and efficient manner. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to): Essential duties:
- Serve as a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with the requirements of the Clery Act.
- Answer emergency and non-emergency calls promptly, calmly, and professionally; obtain necessary information and prioritize requests for service.
- Monitor and operate a variety of security systems, including CCTV cameras, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, access control systems, and emergency call boxes.
- Assist in emergency situations by following established protocols, remaining calm under pressure, and supporting field units with critical information.
- Dispatch Campus Safety Officers and other emergency personnel using two-way radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Provide excellent customer service to students, staff, faculty, and visitors seeking information or assistance.
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining composure in both stressful and routine situations.
- Troubleshoot minor technological issues involving safety systems such as radios, CCTV, and access control platforms.
- Issue keys, access credentials, and radios as authorized; maintain accurate records of all issued and returned campus safety equipment.
- Initiate notifications to police, fire, or emergency medical services as needed, in accordance with department protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including the responsibilities of Campus Safety Officers when necessary.
Secondary responsibilities:
- Flexibility to work additional shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed or required.
- Assist with University athletic events, special events, and other large campus gatherings as assigned.
- Operate the Campus1Card system and assist with the distribution of parking permits in accordance with university procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required): Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a customer service or dispatch-related field.
- Ability to interact professionally with the public.
- Experience with security technology platforms, including access control systems, CCTV monitoring software, or alarm systems.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, both verbally and in writing, with members of the university community and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to remain calm and handle difficult or stressful situations with professionalism and tact.
- Comfortable with and adaptable to using technology in a fast-paced environment.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check, including Pennsylvania Criminal History, Pennsylvania Child Abuse, and FBI fingerprint clearance.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of Clery Act requirements and the role of a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
- Experience working in higher education or a school environment
- Law enforcement, military, campus or public safety experience
- Familiarity with the local area and surrounding community
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:
- The ability to walk for extended periods of time.
- The ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
- The ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.
- The ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.
- The ability to lift objects weighing up to 55 lbs.
