Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Nursing Support duties: Provides basic care services to patients, but does not have an RN or LPN license. Positions in this nursing support work under the direction of physicians, mid-level practitioners, and may work under the direction of registered nurses depending on their unit. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An experienced level role requiring basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision, works through problems of a routine nature, but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures and communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

The position works under the supervision of the professional nurse and collaborates with rehabilitation professionals, wound care team, and nursing staff to meet the needs of the patient within the scope of the role. The position will independently provide, or assist in direct patient care to safety mobilize patients in the inpatient hospital setting The patients are identified by nursing and physical therapy for mobilization and are either assisted out of bed or ambulated to prevent weakening and improve health outcomes during their hospital stay. The position will assist nursing staff with wound care assessments and treatments within their scope of practice. Identification of patient selection will be provided by wound care team and individual critical care units. The position will assist nursing staff with critical care travel of patients off units to testing or procedural areas. The position will successfully complete and maintain competencies in role specific skills. The position provides an environment supportive of the patient and family centered model of care.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant (MA).

2. Completion of Nursing Fundamentals in an accredited Nursing program.

3. One (1) year of related experience as a Nursing Assistant (NA), Patient Care Assistant (PCA), Critical Care Tech (CCT), or Patient Care Tech (PCT).

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1.Provides, or assists patients with mobilization in a safe, efficient and respectful manner. Mobilization includes but is not limited to ambulation, assisting patients to chair, sitting patient on edge of bed, utilizing the mechanical lift, and providing passive range of motion.

2.Reviews and follows activity orders in EMR including activity restrictions and limitations to mobilization.

3.Greets patients, families, visitors and other staff utilizing the principles of Tufts Medical Center service standards

4.Communicates the patients clinical data, including observations, symptoms and deviations from normal to the assigned nurse in a timely manner

5.Completes mobilization documentation in the EMR in accurate and timely manner.

6.Provides comfort measures such as turning and repositioning, to patients in an efficient, safe, and respectful manner

7.Completes wound care competencies

8.Maintains patient and family confidentially, privacy and dignity at all times

9.Maintains cleanliness of equipment by cleaning equipment according to manufacturer, hospital and departmental polices.

10.Promotes patient activity by assisting with mobility and range of motion exercises as assigned

11.Assists with skin assessment and treatments within their scope and under the direction of a registered nurse

12.Connects monitoring equipment to patient under the direction of the nurse

13.Responds to patient and family requests promptly, seeking nurses supervision as needed

14.Uses proper body mechanics and ensures patient dignity in the preparation and execution of patient mobility.

15.Assesses patient presentation, environmental safety and uses safe patient handling techniques.

16.Transfers patients safely from surface to surface and seeks guidance/assistance when needed

17.Promotes patient mobility by educating patients and families as appropriate

18.Seeks assistance from nursing a or therapy to manage lines/tubes as appropriate

19.Consistently follows fall prevention strategies and policies during and upon exiting a patient room.

20.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients being cared for. Able to modify approach to reflect needs of patient's age, cultural diversity and developmental level.

21.Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed

22.Promotes quality, safety, regulatory and patient and family satisfaction

23.Utilizes AMPAC assessment tool to determine level of mobility when needed.

24.Assists in orientation of additional technicians.

Physical Requirements:

1.Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking

2.Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfer patients and equipment

3.Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching

4.Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, etc.

5.Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases and other transmissible infections

6.Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances

7.Subject to varying and unpredictable situations

8.May have contact with hazardous materials

Skills & Abilities:

1. Knowledge of medical terminology

2. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

3. Ability to work with detailed, confidential material.

4. Computer experience.

5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
