The Telecom team acts as an internal Telecommunications company for Peoples Gas by supplying Radio, Cellular service and SCADA support for daily operations. The Telecom Technician II installs, supports, maintains, and repairs all aspects of the Peoples Natural Gas communication network, which includes voice, data, and transport network. In this role you will verify service by testing circuits, equipment and alarms. Using your company provided vehicle you will be on the go keeping the network up to date. This position has an on-call schedule rotation every 6 weeks. Essential Duties:
- Monitor and troubleshoot transport and communications platforms, identifying breakdowns and supporting the restoration and repair of normal operations through various testing methods and equipment.
- Oversee and resolve critical processes, assisting senior-level technicians during emergency situations and periods requiring extended work hours, including on-call responsibilities.
- Provide support to senior technicians in conducting site surveys and collaborate with departmental contacts to plan and coordinate the installation or upgrade of cabling and telecommunications equipment for small or basic systems.
- Assist in installing and upgrading new equipment, coordinating installation activities, and supporting the repair of distribution racks, interconnecting and distribution cables, terminals, intrusion alarms, alerting devices, grounding, and varied signaling and communication systems.
- Recommend precision adjustments to electrical control devices to ensure optimal operating efficiency.
- Install, test, maintain, and repair key telephony systems as directed by voice network senior resources.
- Liaise with vendors to obtain replacement components as necessary.
- Maintain accurate telephony/infrastructure line termination records and prepare thorough written reports documenting work completed.
- Collaborate with field technicians to ensure projects meet established quality and delivery standards.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of LAN/WAN equipment as instructed by data network management.
- Make recommendations following standard operating procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
- Three years of experience in telecommunications/telephony; RF experience or knowledge preferred.
- FCC license preferred.
- Vocational electronics or telecommunications training or an associate's degree is desirable; relevant experience may substitute for preferred education.
- Valid driver's license and eligibility to operate PNG company vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of voice, data, transport networks, and AC/DC power systems.
- Technical proficiency in installing and maintaining various telecommunications systems.
- Familiarity with RF/microwave, fiber, PBX, cabling, and data networks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Capacity to collaborate effectively within a team and across departments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to travel approximately 75% to PNG worksites (and travel beyond Pittsburgh representing PNG).
- Required to operate computers, telecommunications systems, and hand tools.
- Capable of performing physically demanding work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Must possess color vision, depth perception, field of vision, hearing, speaking, ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, repetition, and visual acuity.
- Will encounter extreme temperatures, noise, wet and humid conditions, gas, fumes, odors, dust, mists, poor ventilation, and mechanical and electrical hazards.
