Faculty Position in Anesthesia and Analgesia

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant or associate professor/clinical professor of anesthesia and analgesia. The successful candidate will contribute to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the DVM program, provide surgery services in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and Hospital for Large Animals (HLA), mentor residents, and engage in research and scholarly activity. The appointment is a continuous-term (tenure-equivalent) track position.

The position emphasizes excellence in DVM student instruction and resident mentoring. Assisting with pre-clinical didactic, clinical skills, and anesthesia skills teaching is required. Faculty are expected to assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects.

The successful candidate will join a team of four faculty members, two residents, and ~14 highly skilled anesthesia technicians. The FHSA and HLA are fully equipped, multi-specialty academic hospitals, offering referral services and 24/7 emergency care. The anesthesia section prides itself on working well with all sections of the hospitals and therefore seeks a team member with a collaborative spirit. This team environment ensures that patients are medically optimized before presenting for anesthesia and facilitates continuity of care between services. The FHSA caseload is primarily dogs, cats, and exotic species, with approximately 35,000 cases per year. The HLA caseload is primarily equine, with 15% camelids and small ruminants, and serves approximately 2,000 cases per year.

There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with researchers on all three campuses of Tufts University, within the New England medical community, and beyond. Clinical research is supported by the clinical research shared resource, the clinical trials office, the comparative pathology and genomics shared resource, the Animal Resources Division, and other resources such as the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Current research strengths at Cummings School include cardiovascular health, comparative oncology, musculoskeletal pathophysiology, urology, neurosciences, and infectious disease. All scholarly activity is valued in the school's promotions process and the expectations are dependent on the appointment track and assigned time. The amount of time devoted to research and scholarly activity is negotiable, in accordance with the interests of the faculty member. All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly activity to ensure they remain current in their discipline.
