POSITION SPECIFICS

The School of Engineering at Penn State Behrend is seeking qualified applicants for a one-year Manufacturing Research Engineer position with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will support metals manufacturing initiatives including, but not limited to, workforce development, instruction, research, and curriculum development. The Manufacturing Research Engineer will have the opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scholars across the Penn State University system including PSU personnel, students, and local industry. Additionally, the Manufacturing Research Engineer will be expected to perform fundamental and applied research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and write technical proposals to provide financial support for Behrend's metals manufacturing initiatives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provides technical, administrative, and teaching support for manufacturing workforce development initiatives and programs.
  • Assists in the development of manufacturing education curriculum with emphasis on casting, welding, forging, machining, metallurgy, and additive manufacturing.
  • Works closely with metals manufacturing faculty to provide technical support on research projects with special emphasis on manufacturing processes, material characterization, data collection, data analysis, and technical writing.
  • Performs fundamental and applied research in manufacturing processes with emphasis on casting, welding, forging, CNC machining, metallurgy, automation, and additive manufacturing.
  • Supports ongoing metals manufacturing projects including the new Center for Manufacturing Competitiveness where industry works with students and faculty to develop, test, and implement next-generation technologies and practices.
  • Cultivates relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors.
  • Writes technical proposals and pursues funding opportunities to provide financial support for Behrend's manufacturing initiatives.
  • Works closely with industry partners, vendors, and the facilities department to develop and advance Behrend's manufacturing and materials characterization laboratories.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, materials science, or closely related field.
  • Strong technical writing skills which could include experience writing technical reports, peer-reviewed journal papers, or technical proposals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts both verbally and written.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment where meeting project schedules and deliverables is required.
  • This is a grant funded position where only US citizens are eligible to be employed; you must be a US citizen to be considered for the position

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master's of Science or Ph.D.) in engineering, materials science, or closely related.
  • Research or work experience in metal casting, forging, CNC machining, metallurgy, automation, or additive manufacturing
  • Successful technical proposal writing and technical paper writing experience.

Work conditions:

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to work hands-on in engineering laboratory environments.
  • Ability to work for in a standard office environment.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $65,508.00 - $94,980.00.
